National Food Security Mission (NFSM)




National Food Security Mission was launched in October 2007 and the mission is still continued to this day. The mission aims to increase production through area expansion and productivity; create employment opportunities; and enhance the farm level (i.e. Farm profits) to restore confidence of farmers. As passed by the parliament Government of India has notified the National Food Security Act, 2013 on 10th September, 2013 with the objective to provide for food and nutritional security in human life cycle approach by ensuring access to adequate quantity of quality food at affordable prices to the people of India. The mission is sub-divided into the following:

  1. NFSM Rice (Buh)
  2. NFSM Coarse Cereals (Vaimim)
  3. NFSM Pulses (Be lam)
  4. NFSM Nutre – Cereals (Faisa leh Buhtun)
  5. NFSM Oil seed (Hriak pai thlai)
  6. NFSM Tree (Thing hriak nei)

Objective:

  1. Increasing production of rice, wheat, pulses, coarse cereals (Maize and barley) and Nutri- cereal through area expansion and productivity enhancement in a sustainable manner in the identified districts of the country.
  2. Restoring soil fertility and productivity at the individual farm level.
  3. Enhancing farm level economy (i.e. Farm profits)
  4. Enhancing post-harvest value addition at farm gate for better price realization to farmers through efficient market linkage.

Strategy:

To achieve the above objectives, the mission would adopt following strategies:

  1. Focus on low productivity and high potential districts including cultivation of food grain crops in rain fed areas.
  2. Implementation of cropping system centric interventions in a mission mode approach through active engagement of all the stakeholders at various levels.
  3. Agro-climatic zone wise planning and cluster approach for crop productivity enhancement.
  4. Focus on pulse production through utilization of rice fallow, rice beards and intercropping of pulses with coarse cereals, oilseeds and commercial crops (Sugarcane, Cotton and Jute).
  5. Promotion and extension of improved technologies i.e. Seed Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) including micro-nutrients, soil amendments, Integrated Pest Management IPM), input use efficiency and resource conservation technologies along with capacity building of the farmers / extension functionaries.
  6. Close monitoring of flow of funds to ensure timely reach of interactions to the target beneficiaries.
  7. Integration of various interventions and targets with the district plan of each identified district.
  8. Constant monitoring and periodic evaluation by the implementing agencies for assessing the impact of the interventions for a result oriented approach.

The Mission is roll out to all the District in Mizoram based on Man power available and potentiality of the land. Crops covered under the Mission are season and specific time bound for which everything has to be rolled out on time. Training are imparted to the farmers for every ten hectors of area coverage on packages of practices for each crops to be taken up.
