Agriculture Department, Mizoram began to function as a full fledged Department with the attainment of UT from Assam State in 1972. Since then, the department has been implementing various CSS and State Borne Schemes. At present, there is school of Agriculture Science at Hnahthial (a two years diploma course), eleven District Agriculture offices and twenty six number of Block Agriculture offices under the Department.

The main functions of the Department are :-
1. Formulation and implementation of policies and programmes aimed at achieving rapid agricultural growth through optimum utilization of land, water, soil and plant resources of the State.
2. Establishing farmer-department coordination in implementing and providing technological know-how to the farming community through agricultural extension services.
3. Undertaking all possible measures to ensure timely and adequate supply of quality inputs and services such as fertilizers, seeds, pesticides, agricultural implements, etc.
4. Motivating farmers to minimize the use of pesticides and to control the environmental pollution with the adoption of Integrated Pest Management.
5. Motivating farmers to diversify from traditional crops to commercial crops.
6. Monitoring soil health and testing of nutrient level of soil samples collected from farmers’ fields across the state.
7. Educating farmers on soil and water conservation technologies through implementation of Watershed Projects.
8. Undertaking measures to provide agricultural credit, crop insurance and help the farmers in getting remunerative returns for their produce.
9. Conducting surveys for collection and maintenance of a wide range of statistical and economic data relating to agriculture, required for development planning.
The Department is implementing various State and Central Schemes to enhance Agricultural Crop Production thereby improving the income level of farmers.
The Department is the Government agency responsible for the promotion of agricultural development by promoting the policy framework, public investments and support services needed for domestic and export oriented business enterprise.
1. To increase farmers’ income through increase in production, better quality produce and construction of link road for easy transportation of product.
2. To make agriculture inputs like fertilizers, pesticides, quality planting material and agriculture tools and machineries like power tiller, tractors etc. to farmers at free of cost or at a subsidized rate.
3. To impact knowledge, new agriculture technology and skills to farmers through training demonstration and other extension programmes. To help farmers to be economically independent and to uplift farmers lives through agriculture and economic development of the State and for the welfare of farmers solely dependent on family.
4. The objectives of State Agriculture Department is over-all development of Agriculture in the State and also implementation of various CSS and State flagship programmes to achieve self sufficiency in Agriculture.
5. The District Offices, in a nutshell are responsible for implementation of all schemes and programmes which are taken by the State Agriculture Department.
6. Agriculture District has the same jurisdiction with the administrative District of the State.
